After more than a decade at some of the UK&#8217;s biggest advertising agencies, she made a deliberate decision to redirect her skills towards something with more impact. \u00abI really wanted to use my experience into something worthwhile,\u00bb she says. \u00abNot just adding to a company&#8217;s bottom line, but changing lives, changing the planet.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>She found her way into the sector in 2019, right as the feed-in tariff ended and the industry was recalibrating after a frantic rush of installations. It was the calm after the storm, but an ideal moment to start building.<\/p>\n<h3>How much the market has actually changed<\/h3>\n<p>The gap between 2019 and now is striking. Batteries were barely discussed when Hollie joined: too expensive, no incentives, and little consumer appetite. Today, 87% of designs submitted through OpenSolar include a battery, and modern panels deliver around 30% more energy from the same roof area than they would have six years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Smart flexible tariffs now allow homeowners to charge overnight and draw on stored power during peak hours. What was a relatively simple sell has become a whole-home energy management proposition.<\/p>\n<h3>The energy crisis that changed the conversation<\/h3>\n<p>The real inflection point came in 2022. As energy bills surged in the wake of the war in Ukraine, solar stopped being primarily a sustainability story and became a financial one. Installer pipelines filled up fast, momentum built through 2023 and 2024, and 2025 delivered record numbers: solar generation up nearly 30% year on year, producing over 18 terawatt-hours, and briefly supplying 40% of national demand during peak summer periods.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abIt just sort of peaked in that 2025 space,\u00bb Hollie says. \u00abLast year was huge for us, very busy and really exciting.\u00bb<\/p>\n<h3>The solar coaster is still moving<\/h3>\n<p>The industry&#8217;s nickname captures something real: extreme sensitivity to policy shifts, pricing cycles, and geopolitical events. Hollie doesn&#8217;t romanticise it. The Warm Homes Plan remains vague in its implementation detail, grid constraints have added friction even as adoption grows, and the data points to strong growth rather than a straight line upward forever.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abWe are certainly entering a high growth phase, but it&#8217;s not an endless upward curve.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>The businesses that will thrive, she believes, are those built on agility and resilience, with the ability to switch lanes fast and recover when the ride dips.<\/p>\n<h3>Building the tools the industry needs<\/h3>\n<p>As an Opener, Hollie brings something specific to the product side: years spent in solar distribution, with a clear picture of where the workflow breaks down. Getting from a system design to actual procurement has traditionally meant a fragmented chain of WhatsApps, calls, and emails.<\/p>\n<p>The OpenSolar Shop is now live with six distributors, bringing that process into a single platform with live pricing, live availability, and a Supplier Assist tool in beta that lets distributor account managers engage directly within the workflow.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abI&#8217;m super proud of Shop,\u00bb she says. \u00abIt&#8217;s just great to be able to bring in the distributors and create this marketplace space.\u00bb<\/p>\n<h3>Making space for diverse voices<\/h3>\n<p>Hollie is also a WiSEu (Women in Solar Europe) ambassador and a vocal advocate for bringing more diverse perspectives into climate tech. Her message is practical as much as it is principled: \u00abDon&#8217;t underestimate the value of your perspective. Climate tech needs all of this diversity.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>In a sector moving this fast, that breadth of thinking is not just valuable. It is necessary.<\/p>\n<h3>What comes next<\/h3>\n<p>The UK solar market&#8217;s trajectory reflects years of compounding factors finally aligning: better technology, shifting consumer priorities, grid pressure, and genuine policy momentum.
