They\u2019re intensely political, sitting at the heart of debates about energy security, climate policy and economic growth. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalsolarcouncil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Solar Council<\/a>, under Sonia\u2019s leadership, exists to give the industry a unified voice in these discussions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re aiming for eight terawatts of installed capacity by 2030,\u201d she explains. \u201cBut beyond the numbers, we need to ensure this growth benefits everyone \u2014 from rural communities in developing markets to urban centres in Europe and the US.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Council\u2019s work spans everything from grid integration to workforce development. It\u2019s a reminder that scaling solar isn\u2019t just about installing more panels; it\u2019s about creating systems, policies and markets that allow clean energy to flourish.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Making clean energy a basic right<\/h3>\n<p>Andrew Crossland has spent his career looking for ways to make the energy transition tangible for households. For him, access to solar and storage shouldn\u2019t be a privilege.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone should have the right to these technologies,\u201d he says. \u201cThe right to install them on their homes, sell excess power back to the grid, and be paid fairly for supporting the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This vision is taking shape through the Electric Bill of Rights \u2014 a framework for fair access, transparent grid rules and compensation for grid services. Supporting it is the Electric Protocol, a practical roadmap to remove friction and unlock mass adoption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tools are here,\u201d Andrew says. \u201cThe barriers we face are entirely man-made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Why tariffs won\u2019t stop solar\u2019s momentum<\/h3>\n<p>Recent US tariffs on solar imports have reignited debate about trade and energy policy. While these measures are designed to protect domestic industries, their impact on solar\u2019s growth is complex.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3291\" data-end=\"3402\">Sonia remains optimistic. \u201cWe\u2019re a flexible, resourceful industry. Fundamental economics still favour solar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3404\" data-end=\"3492\">Andrew puts it more bluntly: \u201cIt\u2019s not a tariff. It\u2019s a tax on the American consumer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3494\" data-end=\"3693\">Both agree that the ultimate solution lies in affordability and accessibility. When rooftop solar and home batteries become the default choice for households, political roadblocks lose their power.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3695\" data-end=\"3812\">\u201cLower bills resonate across the political spectrum,\u201d Sonia adds. \u201cThat\u2019s a message any government can get behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3695\" data-end=\"3812\">A future powered by rooftops and batteries<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3864\" data-end=\"4159\">As more homes and businesses adopt solar, grid flexibility becomes critical. In the UK, Andrew\u2019s digital twin modelling shows the potential of distributed systems. With mass deployment of rooftop solar and batteries, 95% of the country\u2019s energy demand could be met without burning gas by 2030.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4161\" data-end=\"4334\">\u201cEven in rainy Britain, the numbers stack up,\u201d Andrew says. \u201cHumble home batteries could soon back up 75% of peak demand, transforming how we think about grid resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4336\" data-end=\"4532\">This decentralised approach isn\u2019t just about energy security. It\u2019s about creating a system where households and businesses are active participants, generating, storing and sharing clean energy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4336\" data-end=\"4532\">Scaling people power<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4562\" data-end=\"4789\">With over seven million people already working in solar globally, the industry is set to become one of the largest job creators of the decade. Sonia predicts that figure could climb to 100 million as installations accelerate.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4791\" data-end=\"4924\">\u201cEvery panel has to be installed by human hands,\u201d she says. \u201cThis isn\u2019t just clean energy. It\u2019s local jobs in every town and city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4926\" data-end=\"5162\">The challenge now is ensuring those jobs come with proper training and safety standards. The Global Solar Council\u2019s training initiatives aim to professionalise the sector, reduce incidents and guarantee quality as the industry scales.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5164\" data-end=\"5309\">\u201cTariffs shrink industries. Training grows them,\u201d Birchy observes. \u201cIf we want vibrant local economies, investing in people is non-negotiable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5164\" data-end=\"5309\">A call to action for a fairer energy future<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5362\" data-end=\"5563\">Solar is no longer about waiting for breakthroughs. The technology is here. The economics are sound. What\u2019s needed now is collaboration between policymakers, industry leaders and local communities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5565\" data-end=\"5721\">\u201cSolar isn\u2019t just about electrons,\u201d Sonia says. \u201cIt\u2019s about empowerment \u2014 lowering bills, creating jobs and giving people control of their energy future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5723\" data-end=\"5863\">Birchy\u2019s message is clear: \u201cSupport the Global Solar Council.
