But growing up with parents who believed in giving back left a mark. \u201cIt was in my DNA,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What began as a small project in Zambia quickly grew. \u201cWe thought we\u2019d do one or two installations,\u201d Moira recalls. \u201cBut once you see the need, you can\u2019t walk away.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Empowered by Light\u2019s microgrids power schools, ranger stations, and community hubs across Africa, Asia and the Americas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Building local capacity, sparking lasting change<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every system is designed and installed by local solar companies \u2014 a deliberate strategy to grow skills and create sustainable change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome of our early partners were tiny operations with one or two people,\u201d Moira says. \u201cNow they\u2019re thriving businesses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Zambia, one partner used their experience to secure funding for more than 150 additional microgrids. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about electricity,\u201d Moira adds. \u201cIt\u2019s about dignity, opportunity and resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Life without electricity and what happens when it arrives<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the 800 million people worldwide living without power, energy poverty shapes every part of daily life. Students study by candlelight or under toxic diesel fumes. Women walk for hours to fetch water, losing time for work and family. Clinics go without refrigeration for medicines. It\u2019s more than inconvenience \u2014 it\u2019s a barrier to education, health and opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Sioma High School in rural Zambia, students once endured long nights with failing generators and polluted air. After the school switched to solar, exam scores improved, morale lifted, and the government stepped in to upgrade facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHaving solar made the students proud of their school for the first time,\u201d Moira says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Kenya\u2019s Kakuma refugee camp, a solar-powered recording studio gives young people a voice. \u201cThey call it Hope Studio,\u201d she says. \u201cThey thought the world had forgotten them. Now they\u2019re sharing music and podcasts globally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>A smarter path to global energy access<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moira believes distributed solar and storage are the fastest, smartest solutions for closing the global energy access gap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhy run power lines across entire countries when microgrids can deliver clean energy now?\u201d she asks. \u201cThe sunlight is there.
