For Louise Butterworth, her curiosity, adaptability, and drive to solve meaningful problems led her exactly where she needed to be.

As Global Head of User Success at OpenSolar and a member of the executive team, Louise leads the team responsible for ensuring our user needs are at the heart of what we build, and that their voices are heard. She also plays a leadership role in our hardware pod, helping to shape the way OpenSolar integrates with distributors around the world.

Her journey hasn’t followed a straight line, and that’s something she’s especially proud of.

“I don’t have one big accomplishment that stands out, but I’m proud of my commitment to learning and upskilling, especially when I come across new challenges that need solving. I’ve taken on various different roles and opportunities over the years, and I always enjoy stepping into new spaces where I can contribute and grow.”

That curiosity and openness to change has been a key ingredient in her success, and it’s something she believes companies can actively nurture in women by giving them meaningful opportunities early in their careers.

“One of the best ways to support women’s careers in STEM is by ensuring they get early, hands-on experience with big projects. Real confidence and credibility come from doing the work, not just talking about it. Training and mentorship programs can also be incredibly valuable in helping women navigate their careers, gain experience, and progress in a typically male dominated sector.

Louise has also learned an important truth about leadership that challenges outdated stereotypes of what makes a good leader.

“I’m not the loudest in the room, and for a long time I worried that meant I wasn’t leadership material. But great mentors showed me you don’t have to be loud to be heard. You just need to believe in your ideas and speak up when it counts.”

Her advice for women considering a career in solar or tech is simple but powerful.

“Surround yourself with people who inspire you. Trust in your abilities. And never feel like you have to change who you are to succeed. The solar industry is an exciting and rewarding space, and I’d encourage anyone considering a career in sustainable STEM to go for it!

At OpenSolar, we’re proud to have leaders like Louise proving every day that leadership doesn’t have one look, one voice, or one style, and that’s exactly how we accelerate action toward real equality.
